Installation Instructions for Custom Programs for Design of Machinery,3ed by Robert L. Norton Introduction There are seven custom computer programs provided on the CD-ROM with this text: programs FOURBAR, FIVEBAR, SIXBAR, SLIDER, MATRIX, DYNACAM, and ENGINE, all written by Professor Norton. These are student editions of the programs and may not be used for commercial purposes. Professional versions with extended capabilities are also available for commercial use as downloadable demos from http://www.designofmachinery.com. Contact him at norton@designofmachinery.com or visit the above web site for more information. Programs FOURBAR, FIVEBAR, SIXBAR, and SLIDER are based on the mathematics derived in Chapters 4 to 7 and 10 to 11 of Design of Machinery and use the equations presented therein to solve for position, velocity, and acceleration in linkages of the variety described in the particular program's name. Program DYNACAM is a cam design program based on the mathematics derived in Chapters 8 and 15. Program ENGINE is based on the mathematics derived in Chapters 13 and 14. Program MATRIX is a general linear simultaneous equation solver that handles systems of up to 16 equations. All have similar choices for display of output data in the form of tables and plots. All the programs are designed to be user friendly and reasonably crash-proof. The author encourages users to email reports of any bugs or problems encountered in their use to him at norton@designofmachinery.com. License Terms These programs are provided free with the text Design of Machinery with a limited license that allows you to use them on one computer for educational purposes and for a period of 2 years from the date of first installation. The CD-ROM that comes with the book must be in the computer's hard drive while the programs are running. Operating System Requirements These programs require Windows 98, 2000, NT, or XP. They are all written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. Hardware Requirements A Pentium III class processor or equivalent with at least 64 MB of RAM is needed, but 128 MB is preferred. A CD- ROM drive is needed, as is a hard disk drive. All require a 15-in or larger monitor or a standard laptop screen. Installing the Software 1. In Windows 2000/NT/XP, you MUST be LOGGED ON as ADMINISTRATOR with FULL PRIVILEGES to install these programs! If you do not have full operating system privileges, the installation will fail. 2. Quit all applications currently running on your Windows computer. 3. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive. 4. Open the Custom Programs folder on the CD-ROM and then open the folder for the program you want to install. 5. Double-click on the Setup.exe file within that program's folder. 6. Follow the instructions on the screen, taking all defaults. 7. It will create a Program Group called “Design of Machinery” and install each program in that group. This will place each of the seven programs conveniently under one item on your Windows Start/Programs menu. 8. As the installation proceeds, you may see messages asking if you want to replace a newer file in your system with an older version from the CD-ROM. Always answer YES to KEEP any NEWER files that are already on your computer. 9. When installation is complete, the program name will appear on the Start Menu under “Design of Machinery.” 10. The programs can be uninstalled with the Windows "Add/Remove Programs" utility in the Control Panel. See Appendix A on p. 769 in Design of Machinery 3ed. for specific instructions on the operation of each program. An index of the contents of the CD-ROM is provided on p. 856. The data files for each program can be copied from the CD-ROM to your hard drive with standard Windows copying techniques.
